1. Reston Is Part of Fairfax County, With One School System
Reston is not an incorporated town. It's an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, so its schools, roads, and police services all come from the county. Reston mailing addresses use the 20190, 20191, and 20194 zip codes.
That keeps things simple on the school side. Every Reston address is served by Fairfax County Public Schools. Many Reston homes are also part of Reston Association, which manages trails, pools, and common areas and charges an annual assessment. Check the HOA or association documents for any home on your list so you can compare total costs.
2. FCPS Organizes Schools Into High School Pyramids
FCPS groups its schools into pyramids. Several elementary schools feed one or more middle schools, which then feed a high school.
When people say a home "feeds" a pyramid, they mean its assigned path from elementary through high school. Some elementary and middle schools are split feeders, so students from the same school can go on to different schools depending on their address. That's one reason to check every address on its own.
3. The South Lakes Pyramid Serves Most of Reston
Most Reston homes are assigned to South Lakes High School, located at 11400 South Lakes Drive. Its main middle school is Langston Hughes Middle School at 11401 Ridge Heights Road.
The elementary schools that have fed Hughes and South Lakes include Dogwood, Forest Edge, Hunters Woods, Lake Anne, Sunrise Valley, and Terraset. Some homes at the western edge of the boundary have fed South Lakes through Rachel Carson Middle School instead. Because pyramids overlap at the edges, confirm the full path for each address.
4. Parts of North Reston Feed Herndon High School
Homes in the far northern part of Reston are generally assigned to Herndon High School at 700 Bennett Street in Herndon. Aldrin and Armstrong elementary schools have fed Herndon Middle School, which feeds Herndon High School.
Two homes a short drive apart can sit in different pyramids. A Reston mailing address doesn't settle the question, so run each address through the official lookup before you fall in love with a house.
5. The 2026 Countywide Boundary Review Largely Left Reston As Is
The Fairfax County School Board approved its comprehensive boundary review on January 22, 2026. It was the county's first district-wide review in decades and reassigned about 1,700 students countywide starting in 2026-27.
The amended recommendation the Board voted on did not list changes for South Lakes, Herndon High, Hughes, Herndon Middle, or the Reston elementary schools named above. Nearby, Coates Elementary in the Herndon area did see reassignments. Even so, confirm the current map for any home you're considering, since small edge changes are easy to miss.
6. Skyview High School Changes the Western Edge
FCPS opened Skyview High School at 2949 Education Drive in Herndon, near Dulles Airport, in fall 2026. On July 16, 2026, the School Board unanimously approved its boundaries. About 2,544 students will move to Skyview over time, mostly from Westfield, South Lakes, and Chantilly high schools.
South Lakes is set to send about 384 students to Skyview, mostly from areas along the western edge of its current boundary. Langston Hughes Middle School was studied, but no change was proposed for it. If you're shopping near the Reston, Herndon, and Oak Hill line, this is the change to check first.
7. Skyview Phases In Over Three School Years
Skyview is opening in steps. In 2026-27, it serves opt-in 9th and 10th graders. In 2027-28, the new 9th-grade class comes from the approved boundary, and FCPS described an option for some rising 9th graders to request their former school. Full boundaries take effect in 2028-29.
If you're buying a home reassigned to Skyview, ask FCPS which grades it would attend, what opt-out options apply, and what transportation is available. Those rules can change, so get the current answer in writing before you plan around them.
